Unlocking the Art of Miniature Painting: A Journey with Erik
Miniature painting is an art form that requires patience, precision, and a passion for detail. In our latest podcast episode, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Erik, a dedicated miniature painter who shared his fascinating journey into the world of Warhammer Necron miniatures. Whether you’re a seasoned painter or just starting out, Erik’s insights and experiences are sure to inspire and inform.

Erik’s journey into miniature painting began with a simple curiosity and quickly evolved into a full-fledged hobby. As a relatively inexperienced painter, he faced numerous challenges, particularly with the intricate details of Warhammer miniatures. “Being a slightly inexperienced painter and relatively new to this, I can tell you it’s quite the journey just starting out,” Erik admits.
One of the most striking aspects of Erik’s work is his ability to bring his miniatures to life. He describes his Necron Overlord as an “Egyptian terminator,” complete with a scythe staff, billowing cape, and a shield-like carapace. Each miniature in his collection has its own unique story and character, from the hovering Plasmancer to the menacing Ophydian Destroyer.

Erik’s dedication to his craft is evident in the meticulous detail of his miniatures. He shares that one of the biggest challenges he faces is painting eyes, which he describes as “the bane of every miniature painter’s existence.” Despite these challenges, Erik’s passion for painting shines through in his work. He spent countless hours perfecting the interior of his Canoptek Spider, even though it’s barely visible, because he’s a self-proclaimed completionist.
The episode also delves into the technical aspects of miniature painting. Erik explains how he uses different techniques and tools to achieve the desired effects. For instance, he uses a rattle can to apply a thin layer of Leadbelcher, a silver metallic paint, to his miniatures. This method ensures a smooth, clean finish that serves as a base for further detailing.

One of the highlights of the episode is Erik’s discussion on the use of contrast paints. He shares how experimenting with these paints led to unexpected but stunning results, such as the swirling energy effect on his Ophydian Destroyer’s blade. “I actually had a lot of unique successes by just mixing paints that were actually never meant to go together,” Erik reveals.
Erik’s journey is a testament to the importance of patience and persistence in miniature painting. Over the course of a year, he painted an impressive 217 miniatures, dedicating two to three hours each night to his craft. His advice to fellow painters is simple yet profound: “Take your time and be patient.”
