To Fae Or Not To Fae

Tobias turned to the blue scaled creature and asked if this was his ship. Captain V gave Tobias a long look and said,

“It could be.”

Tobias nodded with a knowing smile and a wink,

“Let me rephrase that. Are you a hungry captain of this vessel?”

“Well, we have been having hard tack for some time and have lost some of our supply…”

“You look too skinny, come to Tobias’ cart. I will serve you some delicious hot meals!”

Without another word, Tobias threaded his arms in Captain V and Luna’s and began walking them towards his food cart. Although, standing at well over seven feet tall, the Rohmar was able to lift his companions up and more so drag them to his cart. Everyone disembarked except the crew, who stayed behind to guard the ship and oversee any repairs that might be needed.

“Don’t worry about the crew, I have plenty for you to bring back to them!”

They walked through the town of Kal Marha, as it bustled with activity. There seemed to be a frenzy about the festival preparations and some people were running a bit behind so there was much to do in a short time. Every now and then a group of MyrRin would set off down the road the led to the sacred clearing and they would disappear into the distance within a few minutes as they set a brisk pace for their destination.

Tobias eventually set Captain V and Luna down in front of his cart and made ready to serve them. The other two were busy massaging their arms from the well meaning, but very strong grip of their new Rohmar friend. Knowing he had a short time to have him sample his food and pay what he was asking for, Tobias struck up a conversation with his patrons while he prepared plates for them. The buns were the main entree but he had also prepared some delicious accompanying side dishes to compliment the meal and he had some wine as well to wash the rich food down.

“So where are you from?”

Bricky responded, “Would you believe we came from a box?!”

Tobias gave him a funny look. Then Luna spoke up.

“Well as for myself, I have journeyed here from the Elemn continent.”

“Wow, I have never heard of it.”

“Oh it is very far away. A terrible, inhospitable land. I’d actually been looking for a way out for a few years when a saw the first ship in a long time come crashing through the waves to dock. From there, I made my way to the Hume continent where I booked passage on this vessel to come here for the festival! This gentleman was very kind as to allow me to board with very few questions asked.”

Captain V just said,

“That’s how we do it were I’m from. I come from a small place in the backwoods of nowhere and that’s all you need to know. But now that you know who were are, enlighten me my friend, who are you?”

“Ah, I am Tobias! And let me be the first one to welcome you to Kal Marha!”

Bricky set down Bogbean as she wanted to get closer to the scent of hot food. From the shadows, Drexla followed the captain and his group, watching them as she went. Knowing he would be completely out of food, Tobias presented his very best to the group before his cart. Luna spoke up from in front of the smoldering fire before the cart with a contented sigh,

“How much? That was absolutely wonderful!”

“Well that was my very best meal and with a discount for first time buyers, I would say about five gold a piece?”

That last bit came out with a bit of an unintended squeak from Tobias as he asked for such a ridiculously high amount. Almost as soon as he got the words out however, Luna spoke up,

“Done!” and she slammed the gold down on the counter with a smile.

Bricky hadn’t eaten anything but he had given his portion to Bogbean and stored some away for later as well so we still had to pay, but he had no concept of what money was. He turned to Bogbean and asked,

“Um, what is gold?”

Bogbean looked at him with amusement and took out one gold coin from the small pouch on her hip,

“its deez shiny things!”

While this exchange was occuring and Bricky was figuring out how he was going to pay for the meal something else was happening. Luna felt an insistent tug on her dress and looked down to find a foot tall lady with mechanical wings mounted on her back with straps. She had blonde hair bound up into two pony tails on either side of her head with goggles riding on her forehead. She also wore a pink body suit with white trim and various brass buttons that twinkled in the sun. Luna, understandably freaked out.

“Woah, who the bloody hell are you!”

The small woman curtsied at her, and before she could speak Luna asked,

“Are you a real person or are you a constructed creature?”

“I’m a person. I just couldn’t help but notice such a beautiful lady.”

Luna however, did not look happy,

“You’re a person. The only creatures I’ve seen or heard about that look like you are Fae creatures! What are you? You don’t look like they normally do but you are the same size as some of them. The only ones I’ve ever seen at your size are Fae creatures. So you must be Fae. Is that correct? And, if so, what the bloody hell are you doing here and talking to me for?!”

That last question was almost spit out by Luna with such a violent fervor the others around the camp fire could see her anger and fear. Luna looked around with wild eyes before settling back on Drexla.

“Would you allow me to check you? For my own peace of mind. No offense but you are not to be trusted until we can verify what you are.”

“I’ve hear the same about Taur.”

Luna recoiled at the mention of her species name.

“I don’t know what you’ve heard, but I’ve heard no such things about my kind! They don’t like you anywhere!”

“They don’t like your kind anywhere either!”

“That’s not true. They like me here! I’m safe here! The only reason the hume don’t like me is because I can do magic!”

Drexla ignored Luna for the moment, aimed her right arm at the cart counter and propelled herself onto it with a hook and a cord that connected it to her. She landed on the counter to the surprise of Tobias who was cleaning up his station after having served the best customers he had ever had.

Drexla spoke to Tobias,

“Do you happen to have a bit more food to sell?”

“Um yes, I have one more. Um, five gold?”

“Well, if I ate that much, I would die, so how about a large chunk for two gold?”

“Deal.”

When she paid, Tobias broke off a generous piece of one of his buns and placed it on a small saucer for her to eat. As she ate, Luna came up behind her with her notebook out and a measuring instrument. She began measuring the small creature and took the notes down for later review. She was about a foot tall.

Captain V exclaimed at how tiny she was and that he had barely noticed her. At that comment, Drexla polished off the rest of the meal and hopped over to the debonair, blue scaled captain.

“I have something you might be interested in.”

“Oh what would that be little lady?”

At that inquiry, Drexla grinned and took out a large piece of parchment from her bag. She unfolded it to reveal schematics for a large warship.

“It’s amazing right? And the best part is that you don’t even have to dock it. You can just fold it up into a small box and carry it with you!”

“That sounds almost too good to be true. How would you accomplish such a thing? And how much would this even cost?”

“No, no, it’s all in the notes. We just have to build it! I am an idea person and I am bringing my idea to you. You’re the captain and the money person so…”

“Well, but how much is this going to cost? You just want me to build it?”

“Well that’s for you to worry about. We just have to have a boat and I can outfit it with the other stuff but I don’t know about the cost or anything like that. It could be a lot, it could be a little, it just depends on what you want. This is just the basic schematic so we can always upgrade it.”

“So you’re trying to give me this plan?”

“No, no, I’m like the contractor that will build the ship once you get the parts but, you know, you would basically be hiring me for a while until the capital can be raised to make the required changes. I’m hoping the plans I presented to you are of your liking and that you will consider hiring me onto your crew! And that isn’t the only thing I can bring to the plate.”

With that she began taking out other drawings, baubles, inventions, and contraptions that soon engulfed the small food counter on the cart.

“Well, we’ll have to look into the finer details but you can hang around with us for now and stay with our ship too.”

Drexla nodded with an eager grin. Little did he know that she had been on board the ship the entire time! Luna huffed in disagreement but didn’t say anything. She just moved closer to Bogbean and Bricky and as far away from Drexla as she could. The others, not knowing the significance of Luna’s reaction continued their meals in slightly awkward silence.
