A guard was posted for the night but Tobias didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. He was bit distracted, thinking up the next day’s meal. Up atop the cart roof was Drexla preparing her nook for the night. She could see Miguel curled up in the other corner in a ball of rags. She also saw Tobias lighting his torch before moving out to walk the perimeter of their camp on watch.
Everyone was asleep as night settled in. Luna was not quite asleep as she meditated in between sleep and wakefulness. There was a light buzzing she heard as the sound of mechanical wings beating reached her ears. She peeked through her eyelashes, trying to keep as still as possible. Through her lashes she could see Drexla flying around in the air a distance off. She didn’t know that Luna was awake now and could see her.

Drexla flew closer to Bricky. She flitted down to his prone body and used its mass to obscure her as she landed. It would take a while to take the readings she was looking for but she hoped she had enough time. It would only take her about ten minutes and she would hopefully have some more information on this strange creature. Throughout this time, nothing disturbed the group as they slumbered and snuck around each other. When it was time, Tobias traded out with Captain V for the next watch.
As for Tobias, he took a bit of a strange herb and swallowed it as he lay back to rest. He closed his eyes with a smile on his face. Captain V took up his watch and began pacing around to keep an eye out. He wasn’t too thrilled about it as usually the other crew members kept watch at night. He meandered, not really paying close attention to the surrounding area. Despite his lack of attention to detail, Captain V did manage to hear some rustling sounds coming from the back of Tobias’ cart.
Wary of danger now, he slowly approached the back of the cart. He removed his rapier from its sheath with a silent whisper as he prepared for possible battle. Captain V could not see very well in the darkness but the glow of the torch Tobias had handed to him helped. He set it down so it still illuminated the path a bit but did not give his movement away. As he approached he saw that the back door to the cart was broken off its hinges and discarded to one side.
Three small creatures stood on top of one another holding the door open as the one on top began to make its way inside the cart. The one making its way inside was holding a metal disk before him that V had never seen before in all his travels. As they continued breaking in, Captain V began yelling,
“Hey, someone is breaking into the cart! Let’s get on up!”

Action erupted in the camp as everyone woke to the yelling and began to prepare to fight. As noise broke out the three creatures were revealed to be three small Scalekin like Miguel. Tobias was enraged at these Scalekin destroying his cart.
“Get out of there!” he yelled at them!
He attacked them with his spear and managed to stab one and push it back. As he struck a winning blow a crossbow bolt came flying from the darkness of the forest and hit Luna as she was about to get up. She fell back down with a pained cry. From the shadows, emerged four more Scalekin into the light of the bonfire. The two creatures at the back of the wagon turned to Tobias and Captain V as they saw their dead friend beside them on the ground. Luna was hurt but in her anger at being targeted while still on the ground she turned to the nearest Scalekin, the one holding the crossbow that had shot her, opened her mouth and a nasty, noxious cloud of poisonous gas sprayed out towards it. The poison sent it reeling as it coughed in pain. The poison was so powerful, he fell right then and there, shriveling up into a ball as he died.
Bogbean turned to the other Scalekin near Luna with a ravenous grin and began to stab at one of them with her sword. The last Scalekin by cart sent out a powerful spell in a desperate final act. A ray of frosty light pierced through the night through Tobias’ chest. A neat hole ran through him cauterized by the cold as it ran through him. He fell to the ground with a large thud, leaving Captain V to face the last on on his own.
Luna helped Bogbean bring her opponent down with a freezing grip of cold spell. Bricky turned to one and without saying a single word, managed somehow to hurt the creature. None could see when a thin tendril of energy was siphoned away from the body and sucked into Bricky’s mouth as the creature took its last breath. Drexla sent a shot careening into one close to Luna. Yelps of pain could be heard from both sides as the battle raged.

On the ground Tobias has labored breathing and his face was pale and gray with loss of blood. Drexla saw him and the hole in his chest. She had to help him, as he was their only way to the Sacred Clearing. She began to try an patch up his wound enough to stabilize him and keep him from death’s door. Bogbean faced another opponent and used the flat of her sword to trip him up. In fear, he chanted a quick spell and fog began to form around him. It spread an enshrouded everyone in the area in the thick fog. He tried to sneak away through the fog. Not wanting him to get away everyone began attacking in front of themselves to try and hurt it before it got away.
The creature, in its haste, ran into Bricky. He grabbed hold of the Scalekin with all his strength and ripped him right in half. That was the end of the fight. The surviving travelers were left to nurse their wounds and dispose of the bodies that surrounded the camp. Tobias was on the ground barely alive and clinging to his last breaths. Bricky thought quickly and bandaged of the wounds enough to stop the bleeding and brought Tobias back from the brink of death. It had been a rough fight. The first one these travelers had shared in this journey. They were battered and exhausted but they were alive and they felt stronger and more capable after having survived the attack.
