The Mother of Twilight Elects her Champion

The last thing Tobias saw before his eyes closed was a beam of ice shoot towards him. To his left fought Captain V against another Scalekin that had come from the dark forest to attack them. He felt a warm sensation in his chest that turned to fire, then nothing as his consciousness left him.

In the darkness he heard a voice. He could not make out what it was saying to him but with that sound he knew he was not dying any longer. When he opened his eye he was somewhere else. For as far as the eye could see, there was a vast plains. Scattered trees dotted the distance intermittently, but otherwise the blue grass waved in the breeze like an ocean to the horizon. A reddish hue tinted the sky.

While he could not see the companions he had traveled with or his cart and faithful horse, he was soothed by the calming sound of the crickets in the grass and the chirping of birds in the distance. Just the feeling of peaceful quiet right before the sun dips below the horizon and day gives way to night. Tobias looked around at his surroundings from his seat on the ground, feeling a bit unnerved at the sudden loneliness after the hectic events of the battle. He turned and behind him was a large figure.

She towered over even him at eight or ten feet tall. She was dressed in a dark velvet robe that covered her body. A veil of shimmering dark material covered her head and fell down, over her robe, almost to the ground. The only flesh he could see were the two dainty feet that poked out from beneath the folds of the dress and veil. Her pearlescent toe nails shimmered to match her ensemble. When she moved and the inside of the robe was revealed for a brief moment, he could see stars winking at him from the folds. The outside of the robe was almost drab in comparison to the cosmos that sparkled from within. From under the hood and past the veil, Tobias could make out a porcelain jawline with shimmering freckles glimmering from her cheeks every now and then.

When he tried to look closer he could swear that her skin was almost translucent. Fading in and out of sight but so delicately and quickly that he had to be paying attention or he might believe it was all in his head. She seemed so tall from where he sat, looking at him with those strange eyes, that he could not see but more like feel, looking upon him. When she spoke, her voice was low and soothing like a lullaby.

“What are you dreaming about?”

“Right now it would be defending my supplies and those around me. I feel like I failed a bit to be honest.”

“That is what you dream?”

“At least for the moment. I cannot tell you if this is that was a dream or if this is now.”

“Well, I don’t even know what or who I am. I just watch the dreams of others and see what they see themselves to be capable of. I found you! You have marvelous dreams.”

As she spoke, she glided around him to face him rather than stand behind him. As she moved the plains around him warped into a more familiar setting. A large structure in the middle of a large clearing. It was the Sacred Clearing he had visited once before as a child.

However, it was warped. Not what he remembered. Where the clearing of his memory was bright with good memories of happy times, this clearing was macabre and the complete opposite of what he remembered. It was so disturbing, he could not adequately describe it. In front of him, the tall lady beckoned for him to rise.

Tobias got up from his seat on the ground.

“I see many dreams, but for some, their dreams have taken them over. To those, their dreams have become more, they have become reality. That is why I chose you. I reached out to you, hoping that through the strength of your own kind dreams you could help others. There are those that seek to control and influence other’s dreams, to take their power and use it as their own, twisted by their evil. They have no one to defend them in this space. Not after what I have seen.”

She raises a delicate hand and points behind her.

“There is a young child named Ella, that lives in this village. She has the most amazing dreams, the greatest of aspirations. Wishing to no longer be lonely, she reached out for others, but the one who answered is not something she wants. It is a wicked creature, though she believes it to be her best friend. Find her and protect her in the real world where I cannot. Help her go back to the wonderful dreams she once had. Do not let this creature take her.”

“I understand,” answered Tobias, “I will make sure she is safe.”

The lady, the twilight mother, as he had come to call her nodded her thanks for him taking up the quest and turned to leave. Her robes swished and sparkled as she moved. Then everything began to ripple and fade as worried voices came screaming at him.

“Is Tobias ok!?”

He began to feel prickling all over his body as he was shaken and dragged from the dream place he was in, back to the real world with all its pains and sorrows. His eyes were still heavy as he opened them to Extrayus and what he believed was the real world, perhaps.
