Finding a Place in the Sacred City

The group moved on, trying to void further scrutiny now that they had violated a sacred rule of the clearing. Bogbean was in great spirits. Those white hand prints were familiar. She had seen them all over the village back home. These prints must be important to the MyrRin, but she didn’t know just how much.

Drexla kept and eye out for the Tuskari, as she believed they were the ones she had to seek out for the stones she needed while trailing with the others after Tobias and Luna on the cart. Bricky and Bogbean were discussing their ages. Bricky was surprised to find that Bogbean was only eight years old and and adult but he was also an adult but was only one year old.

Bricky started going into details when asked what modifications could be made to him since he was already undead. He informed Bogbean that many of the other workers at the castle had tentacles, claws, webbed feet, all sorts to get around. Some were even able to scurry across the ceilings with their modified limbs.

Luna was appalled, “You’re home is so confusing!”

Drexla asked, “Do you even know what you are?”

“I am a Ghenaht.”

“What does that mean?”

“Eh, ze closest translation vould be, ‘stitched person’.”

“You are mechanical too”

“How do you know zat?”

“I can tell, like with all my trinkets. Like someone created me, someone created you, out of parts.”

“Ah, can you make of me zen?”

“No, I just work with metal. Whoever created you gave you life and intelligence.”

Bogbean was mesmerized by the idea, “so can u switch out parts? like to try out what hair you like and stuff?”

“Vell, I guess, ja. Though I don’t really relish ze thought of doing it zat often.”

Seeing that Bogbean’s curiosity was still not satisfied, Bricky popped out his blue eye and held it out for Bogbean to admire. He held it for a moment before pulling back his hand. However, the eyeball did not follow. It hovered where Bricky had left it. Then he made it swirls in loops before taking it back.

“Zis belonged to a little girl out of the Hume continent.”

Everyone was amazed and impressed if a little grossed out. Then began the barrage of questions. Bricky was assailed with questions on how things would play out if he replaced certain parts or added some. Then Drexla approached Bricky with a question.

“Would it be alright if I study you? To see how you react to things and how they react to you.”

“Okay.” Bricky was non-plussed by the request. He popped the slimy light blue eyeball back into its socket and continued making his way down the path with Bogbean.

The MyrRin all parted to make way for them as they made their way back out to the edges of the Sacred City. As they went further out, the dwellings began to look more ramshackle and bunched together. In this outer area, the group noticed that a lot of the smaller MyrRin camped here. The larger MyrRin seemed to inhabit the inner areas. Everyone was hard at work setting up their humble camps and hardly paid attention to the arriving Rhomar and the group he brought with him.

With a sigh of relief at the lack of attention, Tobias offered, “Shall we look for camp then?”

The group all agreed and began to look around. They passed a large open area that had many market stall with shoppers wandering through. Many MyrRin cohabitated in the area to do business and have community. In the inner ring, they had noticed, the MyrRin stayed in their zones, rarely intermingling. Here, there was a freedom that was lacking in the inner ring.

Tobias backed the wagon into a position strategic for selling his wares and began preparing for a night of work. The others set up their camp nearby with Drexla setting up a small trinket stall to make her own gold. While V went off to find business prospects, Luna attempted to replicate the smell of his buns but something went horribly wrong and a rancid smell emanated instead. She quickly cut it off to not drive away potential customers with a bright blush of embarrassment on her face.

Captain V finds some Seagless that he inquired with about finding some precious stone with strange properties. The Seagless were eerily beautiful with their scaled skin and webbed hands. They had delicate fins in various places as well. They informed him that they had no stones to trade. They explained that the Tuskari held dominion over the mining rights to all stones on the continent and currently forbade all other tribes from mining or extracting any stones. They assured him that they would be willing to trade if he somehow got special dispensation from the Tuskari to mine and sell the stones. They invited him to visit Zendra Cove, and their leader Soran Rell, to the north east, if he ever wished to make more business with them. He thanked them and moved on.

Drexla managed to sell one of her clockwork pieces for about ten gold and Tobias fared a bit better with his delicious buns, making twenty gold for the night. The mistrust of the strangers and the strangers that came with the lone Rhomar went a bit deep and so they did not sell as much as they had hoped. There were many kinds of MyrRin roaming about but one stood out to Tobias as he headed straight for the cart. An all too familiar golden-furred Rhomar was coming for some food.

“Eh good friend! How are you doing? I told you I would find you!”

“So you did. I sold shit here for now.”

“Ah tell me about it. I have had the same issue. No one seems interested since he cannot communicate.” He turned to his mute prisoner, “Right? Ah he doesn’t know what I’m saying. So, I can see you are cooking. Any leftovers?” Lincoln began to drool as he sniffed the air for the scent of Tobias’ buns.

“I have some waiting for you here.”

Lincoln smiled and pulled out ten gold coins that he set down on the counter in front of Tobias. Tobias pushed the coins back. “No charge for old friends.”

“Ah, that’s mighty kind of you.”

With that, Tobias set to preparing a dish for Lincoln as he leaned up against the cart to relax. Drexla tried to make her way over to the captive at the end of Lincoln’s chain without being seen. Once close enough, she whispered in the captive’s ear, “Sprechen sie Emnarian?” The captive shuffled his feet as if he understood what she was asking, but before she could ask anything else, Lincoln noticed the movement.

“Eh, none of that!”

Lincoln yanked on the chain and the captive shuffled closer to this captor to not provoke further punishment. As Drexla saw this happen, she noticed that where the captive had shuffled his feet before moving, was a distinctive JA drawn in the dirt. Bricky saw this and spoke up, directing his words at Lincoln,

“How much?”

“Oh haha a buyer! Well, seeing as you are a friend of my friend Tobias, with a discount, one hundred gold!”

“I have never seen that much money in my entire life.”

“Ah well, that’s too bad now.”

Luna spoke to Bricky, “Perhaps you can win enough in the fights to buy him?”

Tobias corrected Luna, “It is a request you are allowed to make if you win the matches.”

“See, so just win and you’ll be able to request the captive be set free.”

Bricky walked up to Lincoln with a cold look on his face and asked, “Will you be staying here for a while?”

“Why yes! I’ve come to see the games and uh take part in the frivolity at the end.”

Bricky only replies with, “Good,” before walking away.

“Playing hard to get! I like your style.”

Lincoln began to scarf down the food that Tobias set before him on the cart counter. Tobias also set down a portion for the captive and invited him to eat, but Lincoln slid the food over to himself and said,

“He doesn’t need the extra food.”

“Perhaps he would sell better if he were better fed?”

“He eats just fine. So how’s been the travels? Any news? Heard some shit went down.”

“What kind of shit?”

“The kind that makes people burn up in flames!”

“Oh, then I guess you’ve heard more than a little bit huh?”

“Well, news spreads. Especially, when brother fights brother and people go up in flames! I was hoping to get a little more information while I was here and I was glad to find you!”

“I am here for the same reasons actually. Sounds like you probably know about as much as I do.”

“Sounds like it. Most don’t care or don’t want to know.”

“So, anywhere you haven’t looked yet? Like I said, I am looking for information too.”

“Ah, I did go down to the Hume lands. It looked like they were doing something, were up to something. I did find him though.” Lincoln pointed a claw in the captive’s direction.

“Are there any elders around that might be willing to speak with me?”

“Well, I’d go speak to Lady Kree, of the Rooka. Supposedly, they are dealing with their own form of curse. Perhaps they might know something about yours.”

“Well, I appreciate your help.”

“And I appreciate your food!” He polished off the rest of the meal and stood up. “Well, I’m going to go find some lodgings for the night and get this one some water.”

“Will you be taking part in the competitions later?”

“Haha-Hahaha! No. I don’t feel like being beaten in front of everyone.”

“I know how you feel.”

As Lincoln shook off his coat, he caught a bit of leftover food and tossed it over to the captive.

“There, you see. Who says I’m not generous.” He turned to Tobias, “I’ll be back in the morning for more. This time I’ll pay.”

“Alright, I’ll let you pay the next round.”

“Well, see you in the morning.” With that farewell, he yanked on the chain at his hip and yelled, “Come on you, let’s get going!”

Everyone left in the camp was silent for a bit after that. Bricky was the first to break the silence to ask Miguel, “Where will you go now?”

“I don’t have anywhere to go.”

“Why not stay with us then? Or rather, with me?”

Without a word Miguel siddled up behind Bricky and posted up with a wary eye at Bogbean. He was straining himself to keep her in eyesight while appearing nonchalant. Knife out and at the ready, he was not about to let his guard down around Bogbean.

The light was beginning to dim in the open clearing as the sun dipped below the tree line. Everyone settled down around the campfire the Luna set next to Tobias’ food cart. Tobias wanted to explore and speak to some people so Luna offered to stay and look after the cart while he did. The others discussed who wanted to go and who would stay for a bit. In the end, Bogbean and Bricky stayed behind with Luna while the others went off on their own to explore the city.
