A Little Touch of Magic

The fire crackled as the last of the light faded from the sky and darkness settled over the land. Flashed of light began to glow in the clearing as torches and fires were lit for the evening. The scene became an enchanted fair hidden in a magical forest. Things shifted as business began winding down for the evening as vendors began closing up shop and putting away their wares.

Atop the wagon, Drexla fiddled madly with her hard won prize after managing to clean herself up. In the distance the surrounding people began to settled down among the fires to share meals and conversation. Music filled the air as people picked up instruments after eating. This just added to the enchanting nature of the area. Drexla manage to pry open the music box she had managed to snatch as she made her getaway. Inside were all sorts of parts she could use in her inventions. She also saw the cylinder that the music was inscribed on and knew she would have a difficult time replicating it, as she was not musically inclined and had no idea how to make those sound come out the right way. She scrapped as many parts as she could salvage from the piece.

Down by the fire Bricky sat, dazzled by the amazing surrounding he found himself in. He turned a curious look to Luna,

“Und wat do you plan on doing vile you are here Luna?

“Well, it’s my first night here so I was just going to enjoy it.”

“How did you make ze flame?”

“Well, it’s just a little trick I can do you see.” Luna was a bit startled by all the questions he was lobbying her way, “I’ve been traveling by myself for quite a long time so, I’ve learned to make fire for myself, to survive.”

“Ja, but how do you do it?”

“Oh. Well, I’ve never had to describe it before. It’s like, have you ever been near a fire? You can feel the heat coming off of them, the energy?”

“Ja, ze sconces at Castle Isenstadt were quite warm.”

“Right, you can feel the energy from the heat!”

“The energy?”

“The heat of the fire?”

“Right, and if you get too close it burns you. It gets too hot. So, I take that energy and I concentrate on the feeling of the fire in my head and I direct it to my hands, pushing it out into the physical world and causing fire. “

“Can you touch it now?”

“No, I wouldn’t recommend it. I cast the fire, I don’t touch it. I don’t hold it in my hands, I project it.” She held up an effigy she had held, an iron spike with a snake coiled around it carved out of a purple crystal, and demonstrated how she had cast the spell away from herself.

Bogbean saw this and thought, i can do dat to, so she held out her hand and concentrated. She forgot to hold out her palm and instead cupped her hand, yet a small flame still appeared after a few moments of intense concentration on her part. It was very bright, glowing in her palm and nearly blinding her, but it didn’t give off any heat. Until, she threw it. Then it caused a small burn and scorch mark to appear on the ground where she threw it. So, it could be used as a weapon but Bogbean could still hold her magic!

Bricky looked at Luna then at Bogbean then back at Luna.

“Vat? How?”

Bogbean looked at Bricky with a puzzled look on her face, “u cant do dis?”

Bricky pushed his hands out in front of him and scrunched up his face in concentration but nothing happened. He looked at Bogbean with a crestfallen look. The ladies began trying to console him for not being able to cast magic. It seemed it was not in his skill set.

Back atop the cart, Drexla finished demolishing what used to be a beautiful MyrRin music box. After getting all the salvageable parts she could she began chucking any other useless and easily identifiable parts in the bonfire below where the others sat. A small rain of pieces began to shower down from above them.

The tiny parts began making little popping sounds as they hit the flames and melted with the heat. Sparks sometimes shot up from some of them. After a while, the little rain stopped and while they had seen some parts that looked familiar, they had no way of knowing what they were.

Luna spoke first, “That didn’t last time I was here.”

Bricky called up to the cart, “Miguel?”

“Yea?”

“Vat are you doing?”

“Praying?”

“You didn’t throw anything away?”

“My hopes and dreams!”
