Mr. Peepers

Bricky and Bogbean walked through the festival with aimless direction for a while. Then Bricky decided to let his gut guide his steps as they walked. He pulled out the bun he had received at breakfast this morning. He did not eat but he had saved it for Bogbean and handed it to her. She munched on it, ripping through it with her sharp teeth, and it was gone in seconds. Bogbean smiled up at Bricky in thanks after her snack.

On they walked, until they made it to the outer ring where the lights still shone, but it was still much darker than the inner ring. Bricky couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. They looked around as they made their way through the twilight touched paths. There were a few Mir’Sha children playing nearby. They were quite young and skinny. It seemed they hadn’t eaten well in a while. There were Mir’Sha adults nearby but they were in the distance and preoccupied with many things, so the children were left to play.

Bricky stopped gazing out over the scene before him, disconcerted by what he saw. Bogbean stopped next to him and took in the sights and scents in as well. She smelled the night air and the smoke from the torches. From the Mir’Sha she also smelled a familiar scent. The scent of her mother. There was also another scent, a new one, on the night air. It smelled delicious, but the smell hurt really bad the last time she bit it. They smelled like the Mir’Sha warriors they had battled before. So, she curbed her appetite, no wanting to get in trouble.

There were Mir’Sha everywhere she looked. More than she had ever seen before. Bogbean jumped with excitement and tugged on Bricky’s arm,

“does are my peeples!”

“But zey do not look like you.”

“yea but i came from a village of ’em! closest i have to family.”

“I zought you had a volf mozer?”

“yea but she died and then i met my mir’sha mother.”

“So is zere anyzing special here? Waz are zey known for?”

“dey fish real good. and dey have food.”

“Zat is important.”

“are we going dere?”

“I vas trying to follow mein gut, but I don’t know vhere I should go.”

“followin ur guts is always good, so i say lets keep goin! i wanna see if i kno anyun. dey might not kno me so be careful still.”

“Ve are togezher. I zink ve vill be fine,” promised Bricky, “I hope.”

“i tink theyll respec that ur bigger.”

“Ah, is size an important zing?”

“i unno. i was da smallest and not treated da best.”

“Vell, as long as none of zhem are stronger zhan you, ve’ll be fine.”

They nodded to each other and continued on their way, deeper into Mir’Sha territory. A couple of Mir’sha cubs were walking past them playing with a ball. It bounced and bounced as high as they could throw it up in the air. They weren’t paying attention at first as their eyes followed the ball. It wasn’t until footsteps came closer that the children realized strangers had walked in. They backed up, the ball falling from their hands. It rolled towards Bricky and Bogbean. No one moved for a moment as each side was unsure of how to act. The ball rolled towards Bricky and stopped when it hit his boots.

He bent over and picked up the ball, smiling at the children,

“Hallo, here you go.”

With those words of greeting, Bricky chucked the ball right at the children.

For Bricky, this was a regular toss, but for the children and other un-augmented persons, the ball zipped through the air straight at the children. It hit the smaller child of the two and nocked her down with some force. The evening fell quiet, even the insects did not make a sound. The child, grunted softly as she pushed herself up off the ground after the hit. At the same time, a single scratch appeared on Bricky’s left ankle. It seemed like a simple wound, nothing life threatening, but Bricky fell into an unconscious heap before Bogbean’s horrified expression.

Bogbean looked around frantically for what could have taken Bricky out. She saw the wound on the back of his leg but not much else. She thought she saw a shadow dart off into the darkness but it was so difficult to make out in the dim torchlight. Not seeing another option, Bogbean hefted Bricky’s inert body onto her shoulders and began to drag him from the area in search of help. His feet created small furrows in the dirt as they moved.

The little Mir’Sha girl came up to them as they were leaving and looked upset and guilty,

“I’m sorry, he does that sometimes, but he’s really nice I swear!”

“u kno who did dis?! who’se ur friend?”

“Uh well, it was Mr. Peepers! He hurts people when they hurt me. He didn’t mean it! Is he gonna be okay? We can try and help! No one died like that before.”

“well he’s already a bit ded.”

“Oh, he did smell a bit funny.”

“So you think you can help him?”

“okay, we’re staying here tho cause i don’t wanna move him.”

“Okay, I’ll bring the elder. My name is Ella’Mira by the way, but everyone calls me Ella.”

“I’ll go get Hunza!”

Bogbean could only watch as the little girl dropped her ball and ran off in the direction of a cluster of tent homes as fast as she could. Some other Mir’Sha had seen the commotion and were now gathered in a loose semi circle around Bogbean and Bricky. Many were sniffing the air and taking in Bricky’s strange aroma as it permeated the immediate area. All they saw was a dead man hanging off of Bogbean’s shoulders. They did not know that Bricky walked the fine line between death and life. Perhaps the coming elder would be able to help bring him back over to the living side.
