When the travelers caught up to Ella, she put her hands up and shook her head.
“I didn’t do it!”
“No, we know..” Tobias began, but Ella interrupted.
“I swear, and you’re still alive,” she said to Bricky with breathless awe, “See, I told you she could help and she did, he’s standing all better now.”
“No we did that.”

“Nuh uh, I saw her. She did her thingy and he got better. It just took longer this time cause he’s a bit different.”
“We were able to help him after.”
“Well whatever, now you can’t be mad at Mr. Peepers, cause nothing bad happened to him.”
“No we aren’t mad, we just want to talk to him.” Luna elaborated.
“Oh doesn’t really talk. He likes to play games and laugh. I saw him move things and mess with people who messed with me, then I wouldn’t see them anymore.
“Like at all?” asked Luna.
“Well I dunno, they just never come around is all.”
Tobias asked, “Does Mr. Peepers disappear often?”
“Oh he disappears all the time! My mom says can’t see him so he must be invisible, but I can see him.”
“I believe you.”
Bogbean spoke up, “I can also see Mr. Peepers, but they can’t.”
“Why would they, they’re old.”
“Oh.”
“Yea, the old people can’t see him, that’s why he’s fun.”
“He’s not very fun though, he hurt our friend.” Luna pointed out.
“No he’s my friend, he protects me! He looks a little weird, I know, but he laughs so that’s how you know he’s a good guy.”
“But the people who you never see again?”
“I dunno, they just don’t bother me again is all. I always dreamed of someone coming to protect me, and then Mr. Peepers showed up!”
“That, that’s good.”
“Now, I have lots of friends cause no one wants to be mean to me.”
“This is maybe not the best dream.”
“Then he’s the best dream, he followed me here to help me!”
“Yes, but do you remember what he did to our friend over here last night?” Tobias reminded her.

“Yea but it’s cause he hurt me.”
“He didn’t mean to though.” Luna explained.
“he did not!” Bogbean yelled.
“Did too! See I have a big ole bruise,” she lifted her shirt to show her bruised belly where Bricky had launched the ball to when he tried to return it.
“I didn’t hurt him at all! That’s just what Mr. Peepers does!”
“That is why we are trying to find your friend. To talk to him and explain.” Tobias said.
“Oh he won’t talk to you, you’re too old. Not unless you come see him when I see him.”
“When is that?” Luna asked.
“When I sleep!”
“I’m trying to find him now, cause then I can keep him from hurting people if he’s with me.”
“Oh so you can control Mr. Peepers?” Luna piped up, intrigued.
“No, but he seems calmer when he’s near me. So I’m gonna go find him if that’s okay? I am glad you’re feeling better!”
“Danke.” Bricky resonded in earnest.
“What’s that?”
“Zhank you.”
“Ah, you speak funny.”
“Yes, zhank you child.”
“Well, I’m off then. Maybe we can play later?”
“with mr. peepers?”
“Yea sure, if I can find him. I’ll go find him. Bye!”
“Bye!” responded Luna and Tobias in unison.
Ella waved to them and headed off through the buildings to find her friend. They could hear her calling out, “Mr. Peepers, where are you?” as she went. The group all looked at one another, more confused now than when they had entered the Mir’Sha camp. Their questions had not been answered well, and they were left with new ones as well. Who was this Mr. Peepers and why did he have such a hold on the young, impressionable, Ella? They were anxious for answers. Even Drexla showed signs of concern as she scanned around them for danger.
