Lost in Darkness

Luna briefly considered throwing the match if she could get away with it. The others let her know they thought it would be a bad idea. Tobias, especially, made sure to let her know that backing out or being caught throwing the matches would result in a negative reputation within the entire Myr’Rin people and she would be disqualified. Still, the others did not believe they should hold back in the final leg of the battles.

As everyone was bickering and arguing, Drexla rose above their din. She kept getting the feeling of being watched but every time she looked around she couldn’t see a thing. She took out her special goggles to check for magic in the area again. There were small magical pings of objects being worn or carried by people but nothing big, nothing that would be cause for alarm. Still, there was something wrong. Something was off, she just couldn’t place it. She needed help. So, she zipped back down to Luna’s shoulder and lifted a strand of hair to whisper in her ear.

“I think we are being watched.”

“By whom?

“I don’t know. I just know something is here.”

Luna shook her head in dismay and Drexla brought out her sketchbook to show Luna so they could scan the crowd above the rim of the book without suspicion. They tried to look natural but Luna was a bit slow, still they made a good enough show that no one seemed to notice them looking around. The group continued walking around the festival grounds in the soft light of the lanterns along the paths. Luna watched and kept an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. So many different Myr’Rin were wandering around as the festival came close to its conclusion and people arrived at the last minute for the revelry.

In the main hall, the crowd got more and more congested. This made it hard to stay together and they fought against the crowd to keep pace with each other. Drexla chose the easier route by flying above the crowd, using the opportunity to look out for who was watching them and the Tuskari she was also looking to locate. When she looked back down for her group, she realized they were no longer beneath her. She had wandered and lost them in the throngs.

Those beneath found easier paths as the crowd slowly recognized their ragtag team from the fights. Not favorite contenders, they had still shown their prowess in battle and deserved some respect for it. The crowd eased up a bit as people stopped to stare and whisper about them to their friends or family. Bogbean looked up from her lower stature to the shadow Bricky that Drexla had told them about. He was just casually standing off to the side and no one really paid him any mind. He was just between two stalls looking out into the distance with a pensive look on his face.

Bogbean tried to sneak up to him slowly. She didn’t want to spook him and have him get away again. She came from the side and since he was looking up, he missed Bogbean getting closer. Bogbean used the crowd to hide herself and got right up to his side without him noticing a thing. she wanted to yank on his shirt and get to know him better but she didn’t know what he would do. She went to reach up and paused. Bogbean had no idea what she would touch when she grabbed him. The shadow cloth of his shirt was solid but it felt strange in her hands. She gave the strange clothing a good tug.

Startled, shadow Bricky put his hands up and gestured at her to leave him alone. She cried out before he could leave again.

“i’m not gonna hit you like you hit me. calm down.”

Shadow Bricky just looked at Bogbean and began gesturing with his hands at her. She had no idea what he meant.

“what are you looking for?”

He gestured towards himself then her. She was confused for a moment before she had a thought.

“my bricky?”

Shadow Bricky nodded and began slamming his fist into his other hand. She knew that meant he wanted to fight Bricky. He was upset and willing to brawl. Seeing as the corporeal Bricky wasn’t with her, he tried to shoo her off. Waving his hands at her to get her to go away like one would do to a child or small pet.

“fine, i’ll find bricky on my own then.” Bogbean began to walk away, keeping an eye out for her friend.

She looked back to give the shadow one final dirty look only to find that he was standing directly behind her. He was impatiently tapping his foot on the ground with his arms crossed in front of him. Bogbean was taken aback by the strange being before her. She refused to let him follow her. Emotions warred across his features. One moment he was sad at the rejected, then angry, happy that she was talking to him, shy at her addressing him, and then right back to stamping his foot on the ground with impatience.

He kept looking at her expectantly and she saw no way that he would leave her alone. So, she resigned herself to letting hiim trail her as she looked for Bricky.

“okay come on then.”

He threw up his hands as if to say ‘finally’ and followed. As they walked Bogbean tried to catch a whiff of scent from shadow Bricky. She took in a big sniff of the air and could not find a single trace of the shadow. It had no scent that she could notice. She kept trying to see if she could smell anything as they went. She found nothing but she did catch a familiar scent on the wind. It was a dead smell that she knew quite well and headed for it with her nose leading the way. Shadow Bricky followed.

Drexla flew high above the crowds looking for her friends. She was having a hard time because she was looking for a group but didn’t realize her companions had also been separated down below. It was getting darker and darker as the night deepened and she would not be able to look for them from above for much longer. She cast her gaze over the crowds again, this time focusing on what her friends looked like. Darting back and forth over the heads of the festival goers, she saw the flash of purple she was looking for. Luna’s hair would stand out to her anywhere.

She began to dart in that direction when her vision was taken over by darkness as she found herself engulfed in something, most likely a bag. The light in one direction slowly shrank as a sinch was drawn and darkness overtook her completely. In the dark she was completely blind, there was no way she could escape on her own.

Luna looked around as she walked with the others and realized she didn’t see Bogbean or Drexla. Her and the others were a little spaced out as they walked through the crowd. It would have been easy for either of them to get lost.

“Hey, where’s Drexla and Bogbean? I don’t see them with us.”

The others stopped in alarm. They all agreed that Drexla being gone wasn’t as bad, she was usually sneaking off to steal things for her inventions or other interests. They figured she could find her way back to them with her technology, but Bogbean could get lost and confused by the smells in the area. She might have a harder time tracking them down. Bricky was beside himself with worry.

He immediately stuck his had into his eye and pulled it out of its socket. He used it to scan the area. It floated up out of his hand into the air and began to spin to check the surrounding area. It looked around for a bit in search of Bogbean but could not located her in the crowds. What he did notice was a large darker shadow version of himself and as he floated closer to check it out he saw that Bogbean was walking in front of it. She was not walking towards them. Her path was taking her in a wide circle around the festival grounds, away from them.

Bricky’s blue eye floated closer as he pushed it to catch up with her. Bogbean walked in search of her friends, growing a little more frantic each moment that passed without finding them. She was about to stop to catch her bearings again when a blue eyed dropped in front of her from the sky. She should have been afraid but she recognized the eye. It was Bricky’s blue eye. He had shown it to her once before she she was prepared to see it again. It’s familiar blue glow was comforting in her current situation.

She began to look around with excitement, hoping to see her friend. She didn’t see him but she noticed the eye shaking a bit in front of her and moving a bit aways before stopping to look back at her and moving a little more forward to let her know to follow. Bogbean understood the meaning and turned to shadow Bricky.

“looks like he found us already so,” she took his hand in hers, “calm down.”

His hand was very cold in hers before he pulled back. She didn’t let go, instead pulling him in the direction she was trying to follow towards Bricky. He tried to pull his hand out of her grip but found himself unable to. Shadow Bricky was pulled with Bogbean whether he wanted to follow or not now.

Back with the bigger group, Bricky breathed a sign of relief and let the others know.

“Ah, everyone, zhis is gut. Bogbean has found zhe ozher me!”

“You found someone who looks like you with her?” Luna asked.

“She had found mine shadow.”

“Oh. Your shadow?”

“Ja.”

Luna needed further clarification. “Do you mean someone who’s been following you, or your literal shadow?”

“Mine actual shadow.”

Everyone did agree that they had all noticed Bricky didn’t cast a shadow at this time and that he had said his shadow was missing. This must be what he meant, but they were still confused by the whole idea.

“How can we see it then, or catch it?”

“Vell, Bogbean is holding its hand right now und bringing it over.”

They kept walking in the direction of Bricky’s eye as eh focused on finding Bogbean. As they walked he couldn’t help but ask after Drexla as she was also missing.

“Oh you know,” Luna explained, “she’s probably off pilfering something for her inventions.”

“She is very resourceful, ja. I don’t where she even finds or keeps these things.”

“Maybe she had a small hidden compartment or something you know.”
