A semblance of color had returned to Bricky’s countenance and he seemed to have more vigor.

“do you feel better?” Bogbean asked

“Oh ja! I feel much better. It is a little different having someone you can trust.” He gave Bogbean a sheepish look as he said that.

Luna gave Bricky a pointed look but it was also full of concern. “Is it some kind of spell keeping you from talking?”

“Nein. All you need to know is zhat I cannot hurt her.”

“You can’t?” Luna asked, incredulity lacing her words. “Not even if you wanted to? You promise that to me.”

Bricky looked towards Bogbean and his eye flickered green before turning back to Luna and yellow.

“I cannot hurt her.”

“Alright. I’ll trust what you say for now. Maybe we can find a way for you to speak on the matter, even if you can’t for now. It’s not your choice.”

“It never was.”

“My apologies for accusing you of lying. It’s not a lie if you can’t talk about it. I’ll try my best to help.”

“Danke schön.”

“so you don’t know the smiley man he’s talking about?” Bogbean asked Bricky again.

“Yea well he can’t really tell us can he? Do you know him? According to the shadow..”

“yea apparently, he just goes around druggin people.”

“He drugged you?”

“i don’t remember what he served me but it was food. i had just set off on my own. he was friendly. maybe a little too friendly now that i think about it, with a big smile.”

“How big of a smile are we talking?” Luna inquired, “Was it just wide or ear to ear?’

Bogbean thought back and remembered that the mouth of the man had split wide open, tearing the flesh at the corners to reach his ears. What had begun as a normal grin had grown into a nasty rictus that as seared into her memory. With rows upon rows of teeth as far down as she could see in the mouth. It had been a haunting smile but Bogbean had been to hungry and near starvation to care. She had just dug into the food, thankful that one person in this land had been kind to her. His grinning face was the last thing she saw before darkness overtook her.

“That does not sound like a good doctor.” Tobias pointed out.

“he didn’t seem like a doctor when i met him. so thats something new about him.” Bogbean pointed out.

“This guy don’t seem like a healer.” V scoffed.

“Well he can’t be if he made Bricky the way he is now.” Luna responded.

“dont worry bricky. ill help you find him. I got problems with him too.” Bogbean promised.

“Do you still trust me Bogbean?” Bricky asked her.

“i have no reason not to.”

“You’ve been quite lovely to Bogbean and you always have food for her. So I think you genuinely like her, but I also think you have something that you can’t talk about that might put her and some others here in danger.”

“Zhere is only one zhing I can say. I vas zhe one to put you in zhe box.”

They all went silent for a moment, processing the heavy news Bricky has just revealed to Bogbean.

“you can’t tell us why can you?”

“Nein.”

“you can’t say why, huh?”

“Nein.”

“you can’t say if someone told you to do it.”

“Nein.”

Luna turned to Bogbean. “We will find answers.”

“i want to sleep now. not just next to you,” she said to Bricky, “i want Luna there too.”

Luna stepped in to explain, “It’s for the best, with no way of knowing who made you do those things, we have no idea if she might be in danger. We must be careful. Perhaps you need watching after. We don’t know if you have any other commands or something that you’re supposed to follow.”

“Like running from the fire.” Tobias pointed out.

“Ja I cannot stand near fire.”

“Well we’ve seen what it does to you so I don’t think it’s wise to let you near it. Which reminds me, I should be analyzing that little bit of Bricky to see if we can find a way to, heal, him.”

“I have not seen Drexla in a while.” Tobias noted.

“We should see if she might be back at camp.”

They walked back to the encampment, Bricky trudging behind them a bit. He looked around a bit was too absorbed in what had happened. However, with his shadow back, he felt whole again. Where he felt separated from the world before, now he felt like part of it again. Having the truth come out despite his best efforts gave him the impression that the shadow was satisfied at having the information leaked. He thought back on their temporary truce and agreement to find the smiley doctor. Bricky was getting stronger, he could feel new strength coursing through him and hoped he could get strong enough to break free someday.

As they came up on the cart, Tobias noticed a faint flicker of light from one of the top corners of the cart. It was quiet in the immediate area, but the other carts were open and the festival was in full swing with brisk business going on. There were mostly the lesser Myr’Rin around, the greater Myr’Rin tended to concentrate in the inner circles. The surrounding people were still dismissive of the strangers and outcast but they left them alone where the larger Myr’Rin might have taken offense at their mere presence. It was night to see now had vandalized the cart and Tobias breathed a sigh of relief at having arrived at his home.
