Chasing Shadows

Bogbean ran in a desperate rush behind Bricky as he fled away from the bonfire. She almost caught up before she bumped into a burly festival goer and was delayed for a moment. Bricky ran ahead, breathing hard and feeling the exertion of his flight from the camp. Bogbean was able to catch up and asked, once Bricky stopped to catch his breath with his chest heaving,

“are u ok bricky?”

“Nein,” he managed between harsh gasps.

“where are u going?”

“Anyvhere.”

“were u running to or from someting?”

“I was..running..away..from ze..fire und..flamme.”

“well u coulda told us.”

“It vas a tad embarrassing.”

“oh.”

“It is scary for us Genaht. Ze fear of ze flamme. It is damaging to us in a vay ve cannot come back from.”

“oh u cant just sew urself back up after a burn?”

“At the Castle I once served at, zhey had a special vay to get rid of the bodies and to punish,” Bricky said, shaking his head in sadness.

“well ill try not to let fire near u ever again!”

In the silence after that harrowing escape from the flames, Bogbean and Bricky looked around at the nice open field they found themselves in after that long run. It was a part of the festival grounds that was unused and empty. The night sky shone above with the brightness of the moons and stars. It was so bright out here despite the darkness of the night as the light shows down on them from the cosmos above. They could see the glow of the festival lights in the distance and hear the rowdy sounds of the festival goers ramping up for the night’s festivities.

Back where they came running from, the other travelers watched in second hand embarrassment as the people Bogbean and Bricky had knocked into on their way out stood up. They brushed themselves off as the other onlookers checked to make sure they were alright. One commented,

“Well that was fuckin’ rude!”

V noticed something strange as the crowd dispersed and most went back to going about their business. Some of the people that had been knocked over were the hooded figures they had seen looking for Drexla before. They dusted their robes out and adjusted themselves before heading off into the darkness, away from the festival lights.

In the cart, unaware of much of the chaos, Luna turned to Tobias as they worked on the food preparation for tomorrow’s sales.

“I wanted to talk to you while we were working. Drexla mentioned something she called a shadow Bricky. She said it looked like him but a shadow version. I’m not quite sure what that means but have you noticed anything strange about our fellow friend?”

“Bricky?”

“Yes.”

“Well, yea, all of him is strange.”

“Well have you ever noticed if he has a shadow?

Tobias thought about it for a moment and so did Luna, thinking it would stand out to them if their companion of the last month or so had no shadow all the time. Luna did recall that after the arena battle, Bricky seemed different. Even more odd than his usual self. She let Tobias know this and asked if he had noticed.

“You know, I did notice something. I dismissed it in the excitement of the battles but I distinctly remember that after his bout Bricky had no shadow. Even the face, which creates its own shadows was blank, like some sort of weird painted person. Not real almost. Drexla also said it was causing trouble knocking over things and into people.”

“So his shadow is running around doing things?”

“Causing problems.”

“Honestly, out of all the things you could have told me, I didn’t think I would be having to deal with catching someone’s shadow.”

“You’re right, I’ve never dealt with something like that before.”

Back in the starlit field, Bricky felt more at ease in this place, away from the loud crowds. He kept thinking of the situation he found himself in and his head raced with those thoughts and more.

“Vell, Bogbean, I don’t know if I’ll be able to sleep well or at all tonight. I might go look around for a bit longer.”

“do u want to sleep out here?”

“I’m not sure. It will take me a bit to go back to the cart. “

“das okay. im used to sleeping outside all da time. so i like it. so do u have to go alone?”

“Nein, nein. If someone wants to come along, I vould not object.”

“can i walk with u?”

Bricky nodded with a wan smile and turned to go back into the main festival grounds. They couldn’t go back they way they came, with people still recovering from Bricky’s rampage and searching for whoever came barreling through. So, they took an alternate route back into the festival.

As, they walked, Bricky smiled down on Bogbean walking beside him and thanked her.

“Danke, Bogbean is ze best bean.”

Bogbean smiled back and they continued making their way through the crowds.

Drexla scanned the crowd below from the sky above, searching for Bogbean and Bricky. After a few moments, she spotted them making their way through through the festival. She also noticed that they weren’t heading towards the cart and the rest of the group. Drexla knew that it might be some time before Bricky felt comfortable enough to come back after that explosive response. She watched as they melted into the crowd and hoped they would come back before long.
