Saving Dead Bricky

Bogbean had been waiting besides Bricky’s cold body for a long time. He wasn’t bleeding much per se. Just a small ooze of black around the ankle that had been slashed by whatever had come out of nowhere to attack him. The situation was dire and Bogbean was torn about what to do. Should be wait for the healer? or try to help Bricky somehow herself? She didn’t know what she could do.

A small part appeared in the gathered Mir’Sha that were drawn to the smell of death among them. The child that had run off to get the healer was back with a taller Mir’Sha in tow. The woman was all lithe muscle. Many scars covered her body. She wore steel pauldrons on her shoulders and chainmail on her torso for protection. Her legs, she kept free, except two long blades that hung from her sides. One of her eye was closed with a gash running through it and Bogbean knew she had lost it in combat. She was a well seasoned warrior.

Still, her nose wrinkled at the stench of death surrounding Bricky as she approached. She looked puzzled as she took in Bricky and Bogbean. Both were quite unique creatures she had never encountered before.

“What are you two?” she asked with a look of wonder and warry mistrust.

“im a bogbean and he’s a bricky. please help him!”

“What? Oh never mind. Well, let me see.”

She took one side of Bricky’s body and rolled him over to examine him.

“What seems to ail him? I don’t see any stab wounds. Ugh what is this fluid?” In her hands she had a bit of the black sludge that oozed out of Bricky.

“well the girl ella said her peeping friend was the one that ataked him and then he just started oozing evryware and i dont know wat to do!”

“Ella is this true? What is going on?”

“I-I didn’t do it. It was Mr. Peepers! He was protecting me. I think he scratched his leg.”

The older Mir’Sha lady gently turned over Bricky’s legs until she located the wound and gave it a slight squeeze to gauge his state. She took a clean cloth from one of the pouches at her side and wrapped up the wound as tightly as she could. Then, she leaned forward, placing her hand on Bricky’s still chest. She took out a small charm hung around her neck with her other hand. The one on Bricky’s chest began to glow with a soft light. Slight gasps of wonder echoed throughout the crowd in awe of her power and generosity in gifting it to a stranger.

Bogbean waited in anticipation of her friend waking up once the healing was done. Yet, when the lady pulled her hand away, nothing happened. Bricky was as still as before with no signs of recovery. She looked to Bogbean with a look of weary sorrow at having to do this many times before.

“I am sorry young one. It appears your friend is already deceased.”

“well i know that but,”

“Wait, I did not know that! You asked me to help him! He is past my assistance.”

“but i thought u said u could help!”

“Well, yes I am a healer, but I cast my ability and he is not healed. It is not known to work on people.”

Bogbean paused to process what she said before beginning to prepare to leave.

“i gotta go. i gotta get him some help.”

Bogbean began to hoist the body onto her shoulders and the stress of the whole situation gave her the strength she needed to move Bricky by herself. The Mis’Sha lady looked confused. The body was dead. No more could be done. She wondered why this child would refuse to accept the reality.

Bogbean didn’t have time to retrace their meandering steps through the festival so she ran straight through the festival in a straight line. People in her path were shoved out of her way. She barreled through a cart piled high with produce and briefly lost grip on Bricky. His limp body went flying before thudding to the ground with a sickening sound. She picked him up again and continued her mad dash. She ran straight to the center of the festival grounds. She didn’t know her way around the entire area but she remembered the way back to the cart from the arena. So, she headed for the only place she knew.

The trip to their camp seemed to be taking forever. Bogbean was so preoccupied with Bricky’s body that she didn’t see the other creature headed their way. It was barreling in their direction. From out of her left side a black hand made completely of shadow came out and tried to punch her. She dodged it in her rush and continued running towards where she thought camp was. She looked back at it as she went past and saw something that looked just like Bricky but evil, laughing at her. He tried to go for more but she continued moving. Her only thought was to get Bricky back to friends. She didn’t care what lay in her path. She was bent on getting her buddy to safety.

After what felt like ages, she spotted the familiar sight of the wagon. She almost cried at the warm glow of the fire that showed their friends were waiting for them. Bogbean saw her friends but also saw that three strangers were present among them. They were all talking over food. She came to halt before them and splayed Bricky’s body at their feet. She was assailed with questions about what happened as she tried to catch her breath.

Hamptony looked green as he asked, “Is that a dead body? You didn’t serve us that did you?”

Luna ignored the question and asked Bogbean, “What happened to Bricky?”

“What is he a friend?” asked Hamptony, still being ignored as everyone focused on Bricky.

Tobias went to help but remembered that his healing did nothing for Bricky, “Is there anyone here that can stitch up wounds?” He took out some leather that he thought could help.

Bogbean thought for a moment and remembered that Hebe had taught her how to make her own clothes so she was good at stitching. She groaned and smacked her face with her palm, “i can.”

“It’s ok Bogbean, you were desperate and rightfully freaked out.” Luna assured Bogbean.

With a sigh Bogbean went to work on Bricky’s leg wound. She took the spare leather and began to sew as carefully as she could. She wasn’t very good at it yet so she made some mistakes but she managed to close it up. They waited for an hour while Bricky’s body lay motionless.

Bricky woke up and his eyes popped open. He sat up and looked around him in confusion.

“Oh shit! He isn’t dead!” exclaimed Hamptony with a yelp, “You were right! What the hell is this thing?”

Again, Hamptony was ignored as everyone focused on Bricky’s recovery.

“Are you alright? What the hell happened to you?” asked Tobias.

“Uh vhere are ze catzen?”

“What cats? Luna asked.

“Ze talking cats, but smaller zan Tobias.”

“Ah, Mir’Sha!” Luna exclaimed.

“yea, my peeple!” Bogbean explained, causing more confusion because she was not a cat.

“You’re people, what do you mean by that? You’re not a Mir’Sha.”

“Oh do you know them?”

“i lived wit mir’sha in da swamp but we didn’t talk too much.”

You came here by ship. Have you been here before, then?”

“no, i just been in da swamp and then on da boat den here.”

Tobias interjected, “So what happened? Did the Mir’Sha attack you?”

“That’s not like them.” Luna mused.

“Vell, it vas one of ze kinder..”

“Oh no, did you damage one of the children?”

“I don’t know.”

“it was her friend!”

“Her friend? Who’s friend? Another Mir’Sha?”

“yea a kid. i dunno who da friend was. she called him mr. peepers.”

“I’ve never heard of a Mr. Peepers. That just sounds like a bad person.”

Drexla flitted down to ask, “Who was this child?”

“her name is ella but we are not friends anything.”

“Did you see this friend of hers?” Tobias inquired in that soothing voice of his.

“no. i just saw a shadow come out of no where and then it slashed at bricky and disappeered.”

“Oh it could have been the Bricky shadow!” Drexla exclaimed with a shout.

Bogbean thought back on the events of the evening and didn’t recognize any other scent except Bricky’s, the Mir’Sha, and she had also smelled the delicious scent of Miguel on the air, but nothing else. She let them know. There had been another shadow that had attacked her but it was different from what got Bricky. The thing had been smaller. Bogbean let them know everything that she remembered. She could not recall the two shadow things having a scent. The group spent some time discussing what had happened and trading theories back and forth.
