Ankle Assassin

Bricky woke up the next morning feeling a little better but he still had wounds that needed tending to. The others joined him in waking and they all sat by the fire as Tobias prepared and handed out breakfast. As they ate they discussed the upcoming battle that was later in the evening. They all collected themselves. The sun was high in the sky and the festival grounds were well underway, setting up to open.

The festival grounds were showing their wear as people lay everywhere in drunken stupors and the remains of revelry littered the ground. The night had unfolded without issue and the day was calm as they rose. The vendors and other inhabitants that were awake were preparing their own wares or busying themselves with other business for the day before the festival really got back under way for the upcoming fights.

Tobias looked at the group and asked if there was anything they needed to get done today. No one had any real urgency to do anything so he offered up going to find the Mir’Sha cub that had wounded Bricky so terribly the night before. Everyone agreed it would be best to figure out what was going on. Luna left behind her cat to watch over the cart just in case but it was just a precaution as it was unlike the Myr’Rin to vandalize other’s possessions. The group agreed to find the Mir’Sha encampment, locate the Tuskari caravan they had traveled with, and looking for shadows along the way.

The had a better chance of finding the caravan so they went looking towards the center of the city. Tobias looked to Bricky to ask him to keep an eye out for the shadow that they were searching for as they walked through the festival grounds. Bricky nodded and wondered if they would encounter the being on their way.

Tobias remembered that he had seen something strange on their walk,

“If I remember correctly, I thought I saw a strange creature making crude gestures in your direction. I just thought they were heavily obscured in the shadows of the tent saw him in.”

“You know,” Luna added, “I thought I saw that too but I just thought it was the light playing tricks on me or something perhaps like a mirage. It was so strange it didn’t seem real.”

“Vell, I don’t know how I might have lost it, but I have a possible theory about zat. I vas made so everyzhing about me has been attached. Perhaps zhis vas too.”

“So you think they attached a shadow to you as well? Luna inquired.

“I don’t think that’s how it work’s my friend.” Said an apprehensive Tobias.

“Bogbean,” V asked, “did you notice anything strange last night as well?”

“well i found out dat brickys shadow is an asshole. he tried to swing on me. i thought he was gonna chase us all da way back but he didnt.”

“I am so sorry.” Bricky apologized to the group.

The group kept searching for their destinations without luck. They just kept wandering through the festival ground trying to find their way through. When they could not find the caravan, Tobias asked Bricky to try and find his way back to the Mir’Sha encampment that he had been attacked at. At first he had a hard time, Bogbean tried to help but the air was redolent with the rising smells of various foods and other things being prepared in heat. Bricky thought back and remembered their meandering through the festival and tried to follow that same path before ending up where they entered the camp, at last.

“Is this where you were hurt?” V asked Bricky?

“Yes, zis is vhere the ankle assassin made its move.”

“Is that what we’re calling it now?”

They looked around the area they noticed a small gaggle of cubs, different from the ones last night, playing with a similar ball nearby. Without missing a beat, Bogbean went up to the children and began sniffing and searching them all over to find the one from the other night. They complained and yowled their defiance but she wasn’t harming them so they were simply trying to scurry out of her reach.

She got away with it for a few moments before adult Mir’Sha began appearing, being alerted by the yowls of their young. Bogbean was busy shaking down the cubs when she spotted a shadowy figure by the side of a building nearby. Two large eyes stood out to her as they looked around the corner. She stopped dead still and whispered to the others to ask if they were seeing what she was.

“What do you see?” asked Tobias, confused.

Sensing the urgency in her voice, they all began looking around trying to see what she was referring to. No one saw anything. It wasn’t hiding, just staring at her. After a moment or two it began slinking back into the shadows of the building.

“but i saw it. i swear.”

“Let’s go after it then.” Luna encouraged her.

Bogbean led the way heading towards the shadows of the building and overtaking the corner with and aggressive force. There it stood. In the middle of the road. It just stared and stared at her. It blinked once, twice. The others caught up the Bogbean but none of them could see anything.

“Is it up ahead somewhere?” Luna asked.

“yea, its right there. its just staring at me.”

“Is that all it’s doing?”

“he doesnt look well, he doesn’t look good.”

As she finished her sentence the creature smiled at her with a grin full of razor sharp teeth and charged at her in a full sprint. The creature swung a sharp claw at Bogbean which she parried with her sword at the last moment. She had just managed to clear it from its sheath in time. The only thing the others could do was put up defensive stances for a threat they could not see, but they could hear the sound of bone on steel as they saw Bogbean defend herself.

She managed to take it by surprise after blocking its attack so it hopped back and tried to get out of the reach of her weapon. Bogbean took the opportunity to swing her sword and try to get an attack in. She knew she landed her hit. The sword hit it dead on, but it only seemed to pass right through it. A gurgling giggle burbled up from its throat and it danced back deeper into the shadows before running off between buildings and out of sight.

“What was that?” Tobias asked.

“Yes, we saw it hit you, but we could not see it.” Luna added.

“he ran off.”

“Vas zhat vhat got me last night?”

“i didn’t ask if it was mr peepers.”

That was when they heard, in the distance the sound of a light female voice.

“..Peepers, Mr. Peepers! Where’ are you’d you go?”

A small Mir’Sha cub walked around the corner and froze when she saw the group of adventurers in the shadows of the buildings. She turned in a slow, steady manner and began to walk away from the group, trying to draw as little attention as possible to herself. She hoped to pretend she had not seen them. They all looked at Bogbean to confirm that was the girl from last night and at her nod they began to move in her direction. They were all eager for answers as to what had happened last night.
