Round Two – Ding Ding Ding!

The crowd was thick around the registration table as the group approached. Opponents were decided by the arena wardens overseeing the fights and, by sheer luck, the two groups of travelers did not have to face each other. They were each facing a different team of Mir’Sha. Team V was first, with Drexla and Luna.

Bricky wanted to join in on the gambling fun and wanted to bet on their team, but Tobias reminded him he had nothing to bet with.

“Vhat do you mean? I have zhis!” Bricky pulled out his eye as he said this to demonstrate his available valuable.

Tobias shook his head and responded, “Most people will only accept gold for bets, and Myr’Rin want valuable things. I cannot do anything with an eyeball.”

They had a few moments before the battles began so V went in search of a serviceable shield. He found a reliable one for the reasonable price of four gold. It fit well on his arm and the supple leather strap did not cut into his scales. He felt confident in its durability for the upcoming fight.

When it came time for the fights to begin, the group entered the arena. They saw their opponents come sauntering in. It was a trio of Rhomar. They looked like Tobias but their fur was different colors. There was a golden maned male Rhomar, flanked by a smaller lithe red furred male and a white furred female that held a staff in her hands. They were cocky and ready to put on a show in the arena. V’s group was already not looking forward to the fight but were ready to give it their all. Although they had the advantage all the showboating distracted them from the beginning of the battle. V took the opportunity to prepare for an attack. They were defending now but he looked for an opening so he could send a dagger flying into their weak spot.

Drexla flew close to the arena grounds watching for her own opening. She used the bodies of her team mates and their shadows to try and stay out of sight. The white Rhomar was not as enthusiastic in the pandering to the crowds and aimed a magical attack at Luna. It was a ghastly green energy that went to envelop Luna. Luna cringed, preparing for the pain that was sure to come, but felt nothing. She looked up to find herself unharmed. The flames had passed around her without causing damage. The mage had missed.

Luna was also surprised to find that the Rhomar lady was a mage. It was rare among the Myr’Rin to wield magic so the group was caught off guard by the revelation. Luna was not about to let herself be shown up in magic so she threw her own attack. With a quick whisper to a pest in her pocket she sent a swarm of fleas to plague the mage. She also took cover to avoid they eye sight of the opposing magical threat.

The golden Rhomar charged at V and he braced himself for impact. He also threw his dagger as soon as the Rhomar came within range. It landed almost dead on, piercing the armor and landing a blow that threw the Rhomar off balance. He tried to attack V but missed having lost his footing. V struck out at the Rhomar again, but missed. Seeing his failure to land a hit, V used the distraction of his failed attack to escape the immediate range of his opponent and get to a safer position.

Drexla took two shots at the lady Rhomar. She landed her shots and the warrior was injured quite severely. However, in the next moment, flames engulfed Drexla as she flew high above and injured her as if in retaliation of her attack on the Rhomar below. Then she threw another spell of flames towards Luna. It almost reached her and made to engulf her when it simply diffused against her. She was too powerful for the weak attack to leave a mark on her, but now she was angry. She smiled at the attacking mage and in the next moment her hair grew long and thick, twitching to life as a strange low purple glow emanated from her hair strands. The mage was astounded by the hair that it also allowed Luna to cast a hex on her so she was weakened.

Seeing that his team mates were in trouble, the golden Rhomar turned to make sure he could see Luna too and unleashed a loud roar in their direction. V managed to escape the effects of the roar, but Luna was affected by the commanding presence that the roar brought out in the Rhomar. She wanted to get away from him as soon as possible. V saw his opportunity to attack and made his move slashing away at the largest of the Rhomar. V tried his best but missed as he swung too recklessly.

Drexla was at a loss for what to do when she remembered her smoke bombs. She tossed a few down before flitting away to a higher vantage point above the smoke. Ensconced in the concealing smoke for a bit, Lune breathed a sigh of relief. It was not long lived as a couple of red eyes pierced the smoke and seemed to look right at her. That was all the warning she received before a flicker of green magic came hurtling in her direction. One of the arcs of green managed to hurt Luna but it wasn’t too bad. She was able to keep fighting. Not with the Rhomar she was afraid of. She turned away from him. Luna could not attack him but could stop the other red furred one that had been next to her and V too.

Her hair twitched and felt around trying to find something to hold on to but could not. The smoke was helping the other team and was not doing its job of obscuring them well enough to give them the edge in the battle. The golden Rhomar followed where he thought he had seen Luna last and lunged but could not find purchase on anything in the smoke. The smoke was preventing V from making any good moves too. He swung wide hoping to catch something in his path and he did. Drexla was cut from out of no where as V’s blade came swinging out of the smoke with a flash so fast she barely registered the damage before the sword was gone. The blade had caught her in the leg. Not a fatal wound, but she wouldn’t be walking on the leg for the rest of the round. She was lucky she hadn’t lost the leg. A quick bandage ensured she staunched the blood flow and then Drexla returned to battle.

Luna could not avoid the next attack from the russet Rhomar and took the hit so hard it knocked her out consciousness and out of the fight. A quick pause was called while the medical team went into the smoke to recover Luna and place her into one of the healing wards. The fight resumed in short order and it was now two against one. Drexla shot off a couple of blind shots at the golden Rhomar knowing they needed to bring him down first to gain the upper hand in the battle. She could not see it in the smoke but he slumped down as the blood loss made him pass out. The battle was more even now. The russet Rhomar swung his word trying to catch anything with it but cut nothing but smoke in his desperation. He was smaller and a lot less of a threat than the fully armored one that they had just managed to bring down. Drexla shot off some more bolts into the smoke, landing a shot but not damaging the Rhomar much. V also managed to land a blind hit with his rapier but, with the smoke keeping his sight from full capacity, he only landed a surface hit.

A slight breeze wafted through the arena taking the smoke with it. With the clear air The opposing Rhomar could attack with abandon. The russet Rhomar went for V with his blade but V managed to escape injury. He was not as lucky as V landed both of his rapier stabs. He was in bad shape but still standing. Drexla finished patching up her wound and lined up her shots towards the mage. She hit one of her attacks but was once again engulfed in flames. When she missed the other attack she didn’t hesitate to hide behind V to avoid being hurt again.

“Don’t blame me. I’m little.” Drexla whimpered from behind V.

Not done yet, the white furred Rhomar mage whispered an incantation and split into four identical versions of herself. They could not tell who was real, but had to take a chance if they wanted to end this. V slashed at one of the versions hoping to land a hit. She flinched and for a moment he thought he had hurt her, then she disappeared. The other three laughed at his hubris. Drexla came out from behind V and shot off at her again, taking out another copy before dropping down to a nearby rock to avoid being seen. She popped off another shot, taking out the last copy before fire engulfed her once more, more intense than the two previous times. The red Rhomar swiped but missed his hit as he was barely standing. The mage shot off some more magic but missed her shots as well. They were left with an opening to end things. Both teams were looking bad.

Drexla shot off towards each of the Rhomar, hoping to end things quickly. She succeeded, landing her hits, bringing the russet Rhomar down and the Rhomar mage close to passing out from the damage. In the next moment, Drexla was engulfed in flames again and this time it was too much. She fell from the air and landed in the dirt of the arena, touching the ground for the first time in a while. That left just V and the mage, with the mage looking worse for wear. V went to down the mage and missed his first hit swinging wide as his vision doubled from the pain of his wounds. He pivoted in his swing and tried again, this time landing a blow that ended the match. In the end the traveler team won, with their last member barely standing.

The crowd had been nearly silent the entire time. At times they groaned, like when the smoke obscured the battle for a long time, but mostly they just waited with baited breath. When the battle was over the silence was broken with a lout cheer of triumph as they celebrated a crazy match. It had astounded the gathered crowd and they continued cheering for the next round the begin as their appetite for combat was whetted by the first battle. V and the members of the other team that were still to compete watched as the next team walked up to register for their battle. It was a a group of huge, horned Mir’Ryn. The next team of travelers up to fight worked up their courage for the next battle. They were going to need it.
